Ghost-iaries? {Ghost Topiaries}

Yeah, it is a corny name I know but it is how I roll :)

But what do you think?

They were simple to make, they all started with these buckets:

Have I told you how I have a great husband? He had to go to Target to pick up some clothes for his new job and I {yes, much like a 4 year old} asked him to get me a surprise. He gave me that look like “really, could you narrow it down please”, actually it was more than a look, it was a look and then he said “really, could you narrow it down please.” So I said the one spot. He found a bunch of little gems for me there! These buckets were part of that surprise and ‘topiaries’ were the first thing that came to my mind.

I started looking around at things I had on hand and found some dowels and these stryofoam balls I had painted orange thinking they were going to be pumpkins. Well, they didn’t become pumpkins fast enough so now they are going to have lives as ghosts.

These particular ones had holes in the bottoms already for some reason, they came that way so I just wedged the dowels in them. I made the dowels varying lengths.

I needed a way to anchor them in the buckets so I went on another scavenger hunt and found this:

Yup, a sponge, one more specifically reserved for a tile project I have been procrastinating on but again, it didn’t get used fast enough so now it becomes a supporting role in this craft. I am letting you into my brain in this post, yeah, I know, kind of ridiculous.

I cut the sponge into four pieces, one for each bucket and topiary.

I cut a hole in the center of the sponged and put the dowel down the middle.

Then I added some hot glue to the bottom of the dowel and arranged everything in the bucket, it holds rather nicely.

I didn’t want the buckets to be green, I wanted them white so I took them outside and spray painted them.

I tried spray painting the balls but it didn’t go over well, this white is a different brand than I am used to and honestly, wasn’t a huge fan. I am not going to put them on blast because I would like to think I got a lame can, but either way, I had to trouble shoot a way to cover the orange because it showed through the white fabric I had for the ghost part.

That is where this awkward, ovalish shape of felt comes into play.

I hot glued it on the top of the balls, kind of like underpants… for ghosts? Apparently.

Then the fabric I used was actually from a bag of cotton rags I bought at Lowes for a few bucks, it is great multipurpose fabric and I used 1/4 of a sheet for the two smaller ones and cut bigger squares for the two bigger ones.

Then just hot glued those on top as well.

And added some googly eyes, of course you can rock the regular black and white ones too but this is what I found in the bottom of my craft junk drawer, so that is what I used.

Now to cover up that sponge, I grabbed some black card stock and cut it into circles that would fit the top of the buckets. Then I cut into the middle and cut a small circle in the middle, a whole punch would have been genius but I just wanted to cut them to get them on.

Then place them around the dowel and on the sponge, put the cut to the back so it is less noticeable.

Done, and there you have it, a little family of Ghost-iaries.
