Sometime I just get in the mood to make something fun, there doesn’t always have to be a reason, I just want to get crafty in the kitchen. This was one of those times, I picked up a bunch of candy on my last trip to Walmart and I wanted to have fun in the kitchen and what came of it ended up being the perfect craft and recipe for a summer afternoon or gift for a neighbor or friend and the perfect way to Share Funshine! Aren’t these owl cupcakes super cute?! And they are easy to make!
Now when I say easy, I don’t mean like how all those professional bakers make those elaborate cookie videos look on Facebook. This is actually easy, like, you won’t have a chance at ending up with one of those Pinterest fail pictures. Trust me! Just to prove it, let’s start with some two ingredient cupcakes shall we? All you need is a box of your favorite cake mix (I go with white cake mix for light sodas and chocolate for dark sodas) and Dr Pepper® Cherry 2-Liter OR Dr Pepper® Vanilla Float 12-pack OR Dr Pepper® Cherry 12-pack , I have made these with all of these flavors and they are delish!
Here is how simple it is, you pour your cake mix in the bowl and then a can of soda if you bought the 12 pack like so:
or 1.5 cups if you bought the 2 liter. That’s it!
All you have to do is mix those two up and you are done! I didn’t even need a mixer.
I scooped them into cupcake liners and popped them in the oven according to the directions on the box.
I am telling you guys, I have your back on this one. Now let’s get to the candy.
But first, let’s talk about this awesome #ShareFunshine sweepstakes going on at Walmart! I have to admit, I got stuck on that site for almost an hour just checking out all the great ideas!
Back to the fun, I picked up Skittles® (vital for this cupcake), M&M’s® Plain and Life Savers® Hard Candy to put together this owl- isn’t it all pretty laid out on the table?
Instead of frosting, I chose to use melting chocolate in yellow and spread a good amount on all my cupcakes. Then I layered a few lines of the Skittles® (for a couple I used M&M’s® but mostly the Skittles®) along the bottom half of the cupcake. Next I added the Life Savers® Hard Candy in coordinating colors to the top with brown M&M’s® on top and then comes the important part, the beak. If there was a ‘hard’ part this would be it, but it really isn’t hard. You just take a yellow Skittle and smush it flat with your thumb or finger. Then I took my kitchen scissors and cut it into a triangle shape, dipped the end in a bit of the chocolate and sat it on top of the eyes in the middle. That’s it!
Then you have some fun cupcakes perfect for a bbq, picnic, neighbor or no reason at all!
