Plastic Chair Makeover {Tutorial}

So, we all know that when we have children, they come with a lot, sorry- A LOT, of stuff.

And usually it is primary colored and looks like this:

But, to be honest, my favorite design combinations don't involve combining all the primary colors, like many children's toys would suggest.

So I changed it  to this:

MUCH BETTER don't you think? Also, I made the little chair pad removable so I can throw it in the wash when needed.

Click "Read More" to see how I made it!!

Materials:
Chairs
Spray paint for plastic
Fabric
Batting
Velcro
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Sewing machine

First I needed to spray paint my chairs, I picked a chocolate brown, and painted the tops first.

Then I turned them over and painted the bottoms. It took just over a can for my two chairs, 2 cans is perfect and leaves some left over for another project.

After I painted them, I got to work on the chair pad. I made a simple template with a piece of paper.

Then I traced that onto my fabric about a 1/4 bigger than the template and cut out 8 pieces of fabric and 8 pieces of batting (I am doubling the batting to make it a little thicker).

Before sewing them together, I took four of the pieces of fabric and sewed the rough side of the Velcro on, close to the top.

Then I was ready to sew all the layers together. First I laid the piece with the Velcro down face up and then a plain piece on top, face down.

Then I added two layers of batting on top.

Then, I sewed around the edge leaving an opening on the side to turn it right side out.

Before I turned it, I trimmed it down.

Here it is turned right side out.

I folded the opening in and sewed a seam around the whole pad.

Now that the pad is finished, I added the softer side of the Velcro on the rough side.

The last step before I added them to the chair was to cover the back in hot glue.

Then I pressed it down on the chair and let it dry.

Once it is dry, it was easy to remove the pad and the softer side stays glued to the chair and they easily line up. You could glue the soft side on by it self, but this is the easiest way that I found to do it and have it all lined up in the end.

Then they are done!! These are much cuter to have in the house or even the classroom :).

You are so right about kid stuff not matching adult items (unless they are expensive and from Pottery Barn). You did a fantastic job.

You made them look so much better! And I'm sure more comfortable with that little fabric pad. Great job!
