Fringe Quilted Owl Family

I have definitely been on an owl kick since, well, Avery was born. I made her a stuffed felt one that she was a big fan of and I thought maybe I could combine that idea with the whole fringe quilting thing that I have been doing a lot of lately.

Here is what I came up with:

I wanted something she could play with now but had more purposes later and since I made these in progressively larger (or smaller, depending on how you look at it) sizes, they would be good for opposites and ordering later on.

Click "Read More" to see how I made them!

First I made a simple template, I started with a big one and traced it on the fabric, then I trimmed it down about a half inch or so and then traced it again. I did this over and over until I had five sets of pairs of owls.

Then I pinned the two pieces of fabric together as I cut them out.

I also made the bellies and cut those out as well. Here they all are set up to this point; two bodies and one belly per owl.

Next, I traced each one on batting and cut it out, this will go in between the two body fabrics.

I sandwiched the batting with the body fabric and then sewed around the edge about a quarter of an inch in... this is going to be snipped with scissors to make the fringe.

Next, I sewed on the belly.

Then came the eyes, I cut those out of felt.

And beaks out of fabric, this is easier to see in a picture than explain with words:

Then I sewed on the beaks first.

And then I sewed on the eyes.

Last I made wings, I laid the fabric over the owl and traced it in the same fabric that the body was cut from.

After all the sewing is done, I made little cuts all the way around on each one.

In order to get the fun fringe look, I ran them through the washer and dryer and when they came out I used some puff paint to add a little more to the eyes.

And there you have it! A cute little owl family, ready for play!!
